VIROLOGY The service activity of the virology area of the Diagnostic Laboratory focuses on the isolation and identification of viral infections of greater importance for animal health. The primary virological diagnosis in specific pathologies allows the establishment of control measures and / or the eradication of diseases in the producing herd, as well as to carry out the characterization of the viral agents detected. These studies are performed on samples of organs or fluids from animal suspected of specific viral processes.

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY Molecular diagnosis is a general term that encompasses a set of molecular biology techniques used for the identification and analysis of biological markers in the genome and proteome (the genetic code and how these genes are expressed as proteins). The molecular diagnosis, like any medical diagnostic process, aims to determine the cause of a disease that can be of genetic or infectious origin (molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases). The molecular methods are based on the detection of the genome of the pathogen within the organism. These methods are utilized when the classics do not give very good results, either because it is very difficult to recreate viable conditions for the organism artificially; because they are very dangerous and there may posses a high risk of infection; or because they are not very reliable. In order to be able to develop a molecular method, part of the genome or the complete genome of the microorganism intended to be detected must be known, be it a virus, a fungus or a bacterium. The most important molecular methods used today in the diagnosis of infectious diseases are the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), sequencing and agarose gel electrophoresis. These methods are direct and indicate the presence or absence of the genetic material of the pathogen, and therefore, the presence or absence of the pathogen in the sample

SEROLOGY In this department the seroprofiles are worked, which are serial serological studies carried out in different farms that want to know their immunological and sanitary status. Seroprofiles are based on the detection and quantification of circulating antibodies using the available techniques, in order to obtain information about the animal's situation, the exploitation at that moment or previous stages. This type of analysis allows us to acquire knowledge of the health status, choose the best time to vaccinate, control vaccination programs, detect diseases, among others.

BACTEROLOGY Bacteriology refers to the knowledge of bacteria that affect animal health and therefore the production of domestic animals. The work of the bacteriology area refers to the study of samples from animals with suspected infectious diseases. Laboratory analyzes can help Veterinarians with the confirmation of presumptive diagnosis by means of isolation and / or identification of the causative agent, this can be done both in organs of affected animals, drinking water or raw materials used in the preparation of products for animal consumption.

PARASITOLOGY The diagnosis of the parasites is carried out by direct and indirect methods that consist in the identification and identification of such; identification of the lesions they produce or by the immunological reactions that they produce in the host organism. The samples destined for this purpose must reach the laboratory in a state that allows its correct identification; said samples consist of fresh feces, scraped skin or portions of intestine of affected animals and must be processed in the shortest time possible for an adequate analysis.

PATHOLOGY Pathology includes the postmortem studies of an animal, including the performance of the necropsy and the histopathological study to determine the microscopic lesions produced by the effect of viral, bacterial, parasitic, toxic agents or, in their case, by aggressive agents to the organism. For the realization of these studies, it is necessary to posses a complete clinical history of the animal and the herd, vaccines, treatments, etc. These studies are particularly applicable in cases of multifactorial diseases.
